JT Screening at Cucalorus Film Festival (North Carolina)!

It's Christina here!
Apologies for the lapse in blog updates but I literally JUST landed in Wilmington, NC because JT is being screened in the 17th annual Cucalorus Film Festival! Congrats to our entire team on this 3rd official selection. Check out our shiny new individual film page on the festival site HERE.

We're all very excited to be included in the "MollyPettit Shorts Block" in this year's hippest Southern (and non-competitive) fest named of the "25 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee" by MovieMaker Magazine in 2011. This shorts block we're in specifically highlights films made for kids and by kids. I'm looking very forward to sharing JT with the young ones and seeing their reactions to the story.

So if you happen to find yourself in the southeastern part of North Carolina this weekend, check out our screening at 10am in Thalian Hall Black and of course, the rest of the diverse films screening these next four days. If you're a digital JT Supporter, be sure to follow our live tweets (@JemilasTale) and LIKE US on Facebook for post updates (facebook.com/jemilas.tale)!

Let the film fest-ing begin!

Urbanworld Film Festival: INSPIRING!

Hi from Christina B!
A week ago today, we had our world premiere at the Urbanworld Film Festival in NYC. We couldn't have asked for a better festival to be included in. I can't say enough how INSPIRING the fest was! For the folks unable to join us in New York, i just wanted to share a few of the many highlights of my trip to Urbanworld.

JT composer Mike L. and dir. Christina B. at premiere

All-Access is AH-MAZING
Urbanworld grants each selected film (2) all-access passes. I, along with our composer, Mike L., were able to gain entry to all screenings, panels, and after-parties. Not too shabby, if I can say so myself. It was my first time attending a fest as a selected filmmaker, which is very different from attending as a patron or volunteer. The All-Acess badge also makes it a lot easier to start a conversation: "Do you have a film in the festival?" WHY, YES I DO!

CAUTION: Film Overload
I honestly don't think I ever spent an entire day watching films. One the second day of the fest, I know for a fact that I arrived at the 34th St. AMC at 11am and left at 11:30pm. Sounds crazy, right. I definitely caught the festival fever. Of course, I wasn't able to see EVERY film at Urbanworld. But I sure tried. Titles to look out for on the big screen or Netflix include: Love Arranged by Soniya Kirpalani (doc), Make A Movie Like Spike by Jamil Smith, Brooklyn Boheme by Nelson George (doc), Yelling to the Sky by Victoria Mahoney, Kinyarwanda by Alrick Brown and All Things Fall Apart by Mario Van Peebles.

Friends with (Film) Benefits
As a humble recent film grad screening her student film alongside some of the most prime players in today's cinema, I can admit I was very intimidated at the festival. Would my hands shake as I gave out my business card? Did I say the wrong screening time. Oh boy. Luckily, my nerves were quickly calmed. The Urbanworld filmmakers are great, nice, down-to-earth folks from every part of the globe in every field of media! Every corner I was greeted with smiles and sincere advice about how to make the most out of the festival and the ever-changing film business we're all a part of.

Meeting filmmaker Ava DuVernay

Welcome to Free Film School
That's truly the best way to sum up the festival experience. I learned something new everyday! Nuggets of gold from the digital day panels included: A) Distributors want you to prove that as an indie producers you have an engaged audience following your content. Numbers do matter! B) When it comes to web content, what matters most is STORY, PERFORMANCE, and AUDIENCE. It doesn't have to be as slick and sleek as "The Kardashians". C) In the constant battle between creating films because of passion or profit, Passion will get you, your crew, and your project much farther and the profit will meet you in the end because your work will have heart.

THE PREMIERE
Well, that's what brought me to NYC, after all! We were fortunate enough to raffle off our complimentary tickets to both the Friday and Saturday premiere to our Ithaca College alumni supporters who were in town. It was so wonderful to see all their smiling faces in the theater. "JT" had the honor of being included in the longest Shorts Block of the festival (2 whole hours) with some of the most amazing films I've seen. After snapping several photos on the RED CARPET and with our movie poster, we made our way into the theater. I have to say that was the biggest screen I've ever seen our film projected on and it felt great. There were no technical difficulties, thank goodness. The audience even laughed at the funny parts. YAY! Afterwards the Q&A was very informative, especially as a screening filmmaker. I learned the backstory of my peers films and got to answer questions about my own. The audience's overall questions and compliments were of Cynthia B's performance which I can never hear too much of. She was a hit, as always!

For photos galore, please visit our album HERE. Below is a snippet of the screening Q&A.

Urbanworld was overall an amazing festival and I hope I'm fortunate enough to come back next year. As for "Jemila's Tale", we're onward to the Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival on Oct. 15th & 16th in NYC. Please visit http://www.reelsisters.org/filmFestival2011.htm for more info. Hope to see you there!

Cheers,
Christina

Allie's Festival Picks - Part 2

Part two of my previous festival submission post. These are the ambitious picks:

Festival de Cannes, May 2012

We have fellow Ithaca Class of 2011 grad Brad Collins to thank for the inspiration to submit Jemila’s Tale to the Cannes Shorts Corner. His thesis film, Love Potion, was accepted in the festival held in Cannes, France in May 2011 in the short films corner. We’re submitting to the 2012 festival in the same category.

"Organized by the Festival de Cannes, the Short Film Corner is the essential rendez-vous for filmmakers. Since 2004, short film producers and directors have chosen the Short Film Corner as the place to present their films, make meetings reality and take decisive steps for their future careers."

"The Short Film Corner hands you an annual, tailor-made program of industry meets, workshops and conferences that deal with strategic issues. You will benefit from all the advantages of being a Festival de Cannes accredited attendee, from being able to access the Marché du Film exhibitors or those in the Village International. You will also be able to network with all the biggest industry players: institutions, financiers and the most important international reps in the film business.

Your film will benefit from a prime viewing position within the Short Film Corner, and you will be able to take advantage by meeting professionals. Our daily meeting, facilitated by prestigious speakers, workshops and themed conferences will ensure you to get a greater knowledge and improved professional potential. Each day you will get the opportunity to participate to a wide range of events not to be missed as workshops, round tables, happy hours, etc.

Your participation the Short Film Corner will increase the chances of seeing your film selected by international festivals, as well as revealing your talent to potential partners and diffusers.
When you take part in the Short Film Corner, you get to benefit from a tool that is specifically designed to build bridges between the worlds of short and feature films."

Slamdance, January 2012

Because, why not? Slamdance is about celebrating being a filmmaker. Even the festival tagline is “For Filmmakers, By Filmmakers.” We’re filmmakers who made a small film about big ideas that celebrates the creation of story and life. So why not?

The submission process for festivals was about creating a balance between my hopes and dreams and a realistic view of where Jemila’s Tale fits into the wide world of filmmaking. Between big ticket submissions to festivals like Slamdance and Cannes, and some smaller specialty festivals like Kids First! I hope we’ve found our place.
And now we wait!

We’ll let you know when we get the good news!

Allie's Festival Picks - Part 1

If you’ve ever done a basic internet search for film festivals, you can imagine how daunting the task of choosing just a handful can seem.  Of course, there are tools available to make the selection easier.  Websites like WithOutABox.com allow filmmakers to create online press kits and tailor searches to find festivals with specific traits.  Even then, the volume of festivals out there can be overwhelming.  To narrow it down, I did a little more research into each festival and selected the few that make the most sense for Jemila’s Tale.  I’ve selected a few smaller fests, a few that are of medium size, and one really big one – the “shorts corner” at Cannes.

In planning my portion of the festival submissions, I’ve focused mainly on niche festivals that highlight films for youth audiences as well as a few that are close to where I grew up – Ohio.

Here’s a little bit about my first two festival submissions:

Cleveland International Film Festival, March 22 – April 1, 2012.

“For the past 35 years, the CIFF has been the premier film event in Ohio. Today the CIFF presents contemporary international and American Independent filmmaking, with more than 150 features and 130 short subjects from approximately 60 countries.”

My home state!  We’ve entered Jemila’s Tale in the shorts category.

Kids First! Film Festival
“Now in its twelfth year, the KIDS FIRST! Film Festival is a showcase for children's films, TV shows and DVDs from major studios and independent filmmakers. The festival partners with more than 150 venues worldwide who host more than 10,000 screenings of KIDS FIRST! films year-round to an audience of more than one million.
Youth are given a true voice - as curators, as audience members, as film critics, as volunteer staff and as filmmakers showing their work. Almost one-third of the films accepted every year are from student filmmakers.
All films screened during the year are considered for the KIDS FIRST! Best Awards, given once a year. Our Awards Celebration is held in either Los Angeles or Santa Fe, NM, our national headquarters.”

How great is a film festival featuring children’s films with input from kids?  Jemila’s Tale is a twist on a fairytale from a child’s perspective. With Cynthia B. as the star, how could we go wrong with this pick?

Stay tuned for more of my festival picks! I’ll make another post with a few more of my festival selections soon!

Peace,
Allie

Have YOU seen Jemila's Tale?

Christina B. (writer/director) here, checking back in with a new post about our adventures in screening the film so far.

Back in May, between the blur of days after the premiere of "Jemila's Tale" at our class thesis screening on May 13th, 2011, the JT crew thought it would be great to really get as many people in Ithaca, NY to see the film. Could we find another place to screen it? Could we do it for low cost? And most of all, would people, other than our college peers want to see it (again)? Turns out it was a YES to all three!

First up was the first-ever "HerStory Screening" - May 18th, 2011

Within a matter of days really, 9 film teams (featuring females film students in primary crew positions) gathered to screen their thesis films publicly at the Women's Community Building in Ithaca, NY. It was rushed, stressful, and almost silent. Note: always make sure your screening venue has functioning speakers. The end result was an intimate venue where an array of films, including "Jemila's Tale" could reach new audiences and also provided a chance for filmmakers to provide insight about their productions in an impromptu Q&A.

Then came the GIAC screening for Cynthia B's youth group - May 20th, 2011.

48 hours from graduating from college, the JT team was thrilled to finally screen the film for the students at the GIAC community center. It was after all the place where I met Cynthia B., our talented actress. I was actually pretty nervous to screen to the kids. Would they like the film? What if the story only worked with adults and college-age peers? It turned out that the film was a hit! I looked around the room as the screen lit up with Cynthia playing in the fairytale world and every child's face was glued to the screen. Even when the credits rolled and the lights came up, a student who had been a background extra came up to the team at the end and said "That was really good. I'd never been in a movie before!" Best review ever.

Most recently, there was the "SisterFriends" screening - June 24th, 2011

I was invited to the screen the film for JT supporter Ithaca college Professor Elisabeth Nonas and her colleagues, a group of women community educators and administrators called "SisterFriends". This venue proved most insightful as I have been seeking other opportunities for the film to go out into the world, aside from film festivals. I was very grateful for the supportive comments and compelling dialogue that occurred immediately after the film played. Many of the women suggested bringing the film into their school syllabi and tolerance/cultural competency discussions with kids, teachers, and even librarians. By the end of the week, I'd made a copy of the film for each of the SisterFriends, sincerely excited about their requests to possibly implement the film as an additional resource in their education planning. My hope is that the JT team can find even more ways to use the film for doing some real good.

Through the Lens of Ayshea Khan, Director of Photography

Oh hello! My name is Ayshea Khan and I am the Director of Photography for Jemila's Tale. Just wanted to give all of you the inside scoop on the look and feel of the film before it screens this Friday!

Christina’s story revolves around visual storytelling and, of course, color. Therefore careful attention must be paid to the cinematography. Since the story is told from a child’s perspective, I want the cinematography to be vibrant and lively, but at the same time, simple. Jemila is trying to tell her tale as simply as she can, so her fellow students can understand and I don’t want overly complicated camerawork to get in the way. This story follows Jemila in all aspects, and so a moving camera (and therefore a dolly) will be necessary at times. Talking heads is never interesting to watch, and I am striving to have motivated longer shots that can establish point of view and the relationship between characters. One of my favorite examples of long takes covering character movement are the films of John Cassavetes:

From Shadows

Other Inspirations:

From Hotel Chevalier/Darjeeling Limited

From Amelie

Technical Specifications:
Jemila’s Tale will be shot on Super 16mm using the Aaton XTR Production camera and prime lens package. As the cinematographer, I wanted the visual style of the film to have the same beautiful texture as Christina’s script. That texture will be achieved through shooting on Fuijifilm Eterna 500T and Eterna Vivid 250D 16mm film stock. Fujifilm has been known for being able to achieve realistic skin tones, and these two film stocks are no exception:

From Fuijifilm Eterna Vivid 500/250D Test Footage

From Precious

From The Hurt Locker

Eterna Vivid 500T and 250D are sisters, meaning that they are designed so that they can be inter cut seamlessly during editing. As you can see by the characteristic curve, the latitude of both stocks is quite great, which is excellent for the variety of shooting conditions that our film will be in.

PRODUCTION UPDATE: Art Direction, Jemila's Bedroom.

Greetings from Ithaca College!
I wanted to share some of what our art direction team, led by art director Kelly Paul with Jess Hock and Amy Obarski, has been working on in preparation for set construction next weekend.
The set we're designing for Jemila's fairytale bedroom will be constructed in an Ithaca College studio in the Park School of Communications.  We're using flats to form the walls and constructing "furniture" out of cardboard to create the visual style of a pop-up book.
Check out some of Kelly's preliminary sketches for the design:

The Internet still blows my mind: Look at these statistics from our campaign.

I have a vivid memory of my absolute astonishment the morning of Christmas Eve as I turned on my computer to realize that our Jemila's page on Indiegogo.com had over 130 page views- just an hour after launch. It was, quite honestly, beyond my expectations. This has been a wonderful experience for me, and I have enjoyed watching first hand the power of the connection the Internet provides.

Here are some of the statistics from our campaign:

Total money raised on Indiegogo.com: $2,007
Total Indiegogo.com/jemilas-tale page views (as of the time of this post): 4,497
58 Online Funders
Our page was marked as a favorite by 65 Indiegogo users
We were featured not once, but twice, by the good folks at Indiegogo.com. We have been on their home screen since January 10th, and we were the Campaign of the day on the Indiegogo Twitter page on January 20th.

Some of our Blog statistics are pretty cool as well. For example:

As of right now, our Jemila's Tale blog- the one you're reading right now- has received 104 page views today alone.
And we've has 807 total page views since we began posting at the end of December.
121 of those page views came directly from a link on Facebook (Yay! social media!)
We went international too - 674 of our page views were from the United States. Other audiences came to our page from France, Italy, Canada, Barbados and more.

The extent of the outreach of our message, our call for help, has been staggering for me. It's been a fun ride, and I have been touched by the outreach of support from our friends and families.
It is thanks to you that we have been able to come this far.
Thank You!
Christina, Ayshea and Allie

Success!!

Success!! Thank you so much for helping us make our thesis a reality. Your money will aid us in the purchase of film stocks and film processing. I cannot convey in words the extent to which all of your support has truly touched me. I cannot say “thank you” enough.
On behalf Christina, Ayshea, and our entire team, Thank You!
Allie

The campaign may be over - but this is just the beginning...

Once upon a time 3 industrious young women set out to raise money for their thesis film...
Through this first and important phase of our thesis journey, we've realized how blessed we are to have some wonderful people in our lives. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support and your generosity.
Thanks to you, we have money to help us purchase the film we need to make Jemila's world come to life. We won't forget your contributions- every one of our supporters will see their name appear on the credits of our completed film. We hope that you won't forget about us either! Remember to continue checking right here as we post updates throughout the semester on our films progress.
Yesterday, in addition to being our final day of the Indiegogo campaign, was also our first official day in Thesis as Christina, Ayshea and I attended class in Ithaca, NY. We've got a long way to go before the semester comes to a close, but I am already amazed at how far we've come- all thanks to you!

Thank you,

It's the final countdown!

Hello all and welcome to the final 24 hours of our Indiegogo fundraising campaign for our Thesis film, Jemila's Tale. We're currently $600 shy of our goal, but with your help we can we make it!

As we wrap up this chapter of our thesis adventure, Christina, Ayshea and I have been reminded of all of the love and support from our family and friends. Thank you for being there for us.
