Christina’s story revolves around visual storytelling and, of course, color. Therefore careful attention must be paid to the cinematography. Since the story is told from a child’s perspective, I want the cinematography to be vibrant and lively, but at the same time, simple. Jemila is trying to tell her tale as simply as she can, so her fellow students can understand and I don’t want overly complicated camerawork to get in the way. This story follows Jemila in all aspects, and so a moving camera (and therefore a dolly) will be necessary at times. Talking heads is never interesting to watch, and I am striving to have motivated longer shots that can establish point of view and the relationship between characters. One of my favorite examples of long takes covering character movement are the films of John Cassavetes:

Jemila’s Tale will be shot on Super 16mm using the Aaton XTR Production camera and prime lens package. As the cinematographer, I wanted the visual style of the film to have the same beautiful texture as Christina’s script. That texture will be achieved through shooting on Fuijifilm Eterna 500T and Eterna Vivid 250D 16mm film stock. Fujifilm has been known for being able to achieve realistic skin tones, and these two film stocks are no exception:

Eterna Vivid 500T and 250D are sisters, meaning that they are designed so that they can be inter cut seamlessly during editing. As you can see by the characteristic curve, the latitude of both stocks is quite great, which is excellent for the variety of shooting conditions that our film will be in.
